Rebuilding a native HIPAA-compliant medical patient layout displaying health tracks, logs, and peer scheduling securely.

Fatal Platform Crashes
The Problem

A digital health startup had a patient-facing mobile app that suffered from frequent crash reports on Android, HIPAA compliance gaps in local data storage, and an Expo SDK version too outdated to pass App Store and Play Store review requirements.

Our Approach

We performed a full SDK upgrade to the latest Expo managed workflow and migrated local storage from AsyncStorage to an encrypted keychain-backed store compliant with HIPAA § 164.312(a)(2). Zustand replaced Context API for state management, eliminating the cascade re-render patterns causing crashes. Fastlane automated code signing and deployment pipelines for both iOS and Android, allowing the team to ship compliant builds without manual Xcode or Android Studio configuration.

The Outcome

Fatal crash rate dropped to zero across both platforms in the three months following the rebuild. The app passed App Store review on the first submission. HIPAA compliance was independently validated with no findings on local data handling.
